Text FilesAll you need to edit these files is a basic text editor such as Notepad. The name value is what Steam looks at when adding mods to your library, so that should be changed to a custom one. This file defines things such as the name of the game, what map to start a new game from, and what DLLs to load. The first file you should copy over from the valve folder, no matter what other files you plan on modifying, is the liblist.gam file. This works because Half-Life uses the valve folder as a fallback for any files that are missing from your mod, meaning you only have to copy over files that you plan on modifying. Technically, you now have a mod! If you run the game with -game and type gamedir in console, you'll see that the game is running normal Half-Life, but the folder you just created is being used as the game directory. You can name it anything, but try to avoid using special characters or spaces, as the game may not recognize it. To create a separate game, navigate to the Half-Life root folder and create a new folder. SetupThe whole custom mods section will assume you're doing things in a separate game and not modifying core files. When dealing with individual files you should never have to do anything in Half-Life's root directory unless you're extracting files with the proper folder structure already created within the archive. ![]() All paths listed below are relative to the game folder, i.e. Whichever method you choose, you will need to know what files go where. I personally prefer the latter, so you can create different sets of mods without ever changing the main game files. There are two ways you can do this: 1) Replacing existing files in the valve folder and launching the game normally, or 2) creating a new game folder in Half-Life's root folder, putting the files in there, and launching the game with the -game parameter, as mentioned above. Mods can also be downloaded as single files that you can override base game resources with. If you are doing this through Steam, it will automatically detect the mod on the next startup, meaning you can skip this step and launch it directly from your library. To get these mods running, you need to launch Half-Life with the launch parameter -game, where is the name of the folder you just extracted. Keep in mind that most mods these days are made for the Steam version of Half-Life, so some mods might be incompatible with the CD version. C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Half-Life
